Crime
Prevention & Community Development Programs |
| a. |
Economic Development
through Entrepreneurship Training |
|
Youth and women
are our prime targets in crime prevention & community development.
Our strategy is to create right opportunities for them to prosper
in life. |
|
We work in crime
breeding areas with poor youth and women. We give them vocational
training, remedial education and guidance. Thus we create opportunities
to excel. This has reduced the chance of youth & women being
criminalized. Our Centre for Entrepreneurship and Development handles
the task efficiently. |
|
During 2006 -
2008, 44 women and adolescent girls had enrolled themselves in our
Beautician & Cosmetician training program. 38 women and adolescent
girls had enrolled themselves in our Tailoring & Fashion Designing
program. |
|
Other than these,
61 students from slum communities had enrolled them in our personality
development program. 50 students had enrolled in our Computer aided
Office Automation program. We have conducted as many as twenty seven
workshops on income generation and related topics during 2006 -
2008. |
b. |
Social Change through Information- Communication
Technology |
|
Our crime prevention
program does not stop with creating economic opportunities. We have
a committed group of young people who volunteer to spend their time
with us to stand for a united, secular and peace loving India. |
|
Our cultural team
spends quality time in bring out awareness about various issues
related to being criminalized and criminal justice system among
youth and adult villagers in various parts of Vidarbha. |
|
It is observed
that in urban areas basically youth form slums areas get involved
in the crime. The reason for involvement of the youth in the crime
is either because of disturbed family background, or the anti social
company. Hence VARHAD uses media and communication as a tool to
reach young people and to involve them in the process of nation
building. |
|
Along with economic
development and awareness programs, VARHAD has also realized that
a good social environment is necessary to prevent crime altogether.
Hence it has started to work on basic issues in the community such
as health, education and development. |

Legal Services |
| |
VARHAD provide
legal service with a view to motivate under trial and convict of
all age of both the sex toward reformation and rehabilitation. |
| |
The aim is to
promote under trial prisoners to get free and fair trial. The current
functioning of Criminal Justice System doesn’t make it happens
in reality. A large number of under trial are behind bar not only
because they have committed certain offence but they don’t
have resources to defend them in the court of law. Therefore they
must have access to free and fair trial. |
| |
a. |
Under Trail Prisoners |
| |
|
There is a large section of
the prison population whose cases are pending in at courts and they
are imprisoned waiting for trail. Many of them are booked for less
serious or petty offences. We provide legal aid and guidance to
the most deserving under trail prisoners. |
| |
(i) |
We have referred and directly
helped up to 160 cases at JMFC Court, 15 at CJM, 148 at Session
which amounts to 323 cases during 2006-2008 |
| |
(ii) |
There are certain provisions
and cases under law for which along with the court, A C P (Spl.
Executive Magistrate), Executive magistrate and S.D.M can handle
without directly referring to the court. VARHAD intervenes at this
level to help them enjoy the privilege of law. |
| |
We have referred
as many as 307 cases during 2006- 2008. VARHAD has been instrumental
in the release of 139 people under PR bond and 95 under surety during
2006-2008 |
| |
b. |
Convict Prisoners |
| |
We at VARHAD are
committed to help convicted prisoners also who are put behind the
bars for years, lamenting for visiting their family. |
| |
We have handled as many as 779 convict
cases (directly and in directly) during 2006- 2008 |
| |
(i) |
At most genuine cases, we
help them to apply for Parole and Furlough. With regard to our work
in release of poor prisoners on parole, furlough and death parole,
we have helped in the release of ---prisoners under the provision.
|
| |
(ii) |
After working in the field
for a considerable period of time, we have realized that even most
convict prisoners are innocent and are lamenting for justice. Hence
we have initiated to work at obtaining justice at High Court and
if necessary at Supreme Court. We have referred 80 cases at High
Court and 20 at the Supreme Court during 2006-2008. |
| II |
Vocational
Training at Prison |
| |
The
motto of the prison system is to correct the individual and make
him/her a better individual. But, for some reason or other the prison
system has not been able to keep the women prisoners engaged in
an activity within the premises. |
| |
Keeping
this in mind, we at VARHAD have started vocational training centre
for women inside prison. We have made women prisoners competent
enough to face the world by imparting training in a specific trade. |
| III |
Economic
Development Program at Prison |
| |
Realizing
the future needs of the prisoners and to improve their thrift habits,
we have initiated Self Help Group for women prisoners inside the
prison. This is the first ever attempt in the prison history of
Maharashtra. The Self Help Group called “Bandini Mahila Bachat
Gat” has 11 members in the group at present. |
| IV |
Adult learning
Program at Prison |
| |
Our
adult literacy program is an answer to the miserable state of literacy
among prisoners in India. As a result of our initiative many of
the prisoners are able to pass board exam conducted by Maharashtra
State. During 2006- 2008, 23 prisoners are enrolled in our literacy
class and 9 are in our 4th standard preparatory class. |
| |
Moreover,
number of prisoners has passed the music degree exam conducted by
Akil Bhartiya Gandharva Maha Vidyapeeth, Meeraj (All India Music
Institute) through our initiative. We have also played key role
in organizing recreation programs for prisoners inside the prison
premises. |
